After growing to become the largest specialty tortilla manufacturer in Florida, the business has since branched out. They now proudly create well over 100 specialty food products, including salsa, jam, popcorn, pepper sauces, pickled items, and potato chips.

First and foremost, these chips are made from russet potatoes. The company only recently introduced their potato chip line after several years of searching for a potato source that matched their quality expectations. We’ve read they settled on russet potatoes sourced from Canada, but haven’t 100% confirmed …

Russet potatoes have a slightly higher sugar content than other types of potatoes. When sliced and cooked, the resulting chips turn a deeper brown color vs. standard chips. They chips aren’t cooked longer or burned at all … the sugar caramelizes during the cooking process. The happy end result is a dark chip!

The company makes three varieties of potato chips. First is the Original variety, seasoned with the same spice mix as their well known tortilla chips. There’s also a Sea Salt & Vinegar style, and then our favorite, the Sea Salt variety.

We lean toward the Sea Salt Chips because they have limited ingredients – russet potatoes, canola oil, and sea salt. The chips contain no preservatives, artificial flavors, or trans fat. They’re gluten free, too!

Appearance, Taste, & More …

Old Florida Gourmet Potato Chips are crispy, perfectly seasoned, not too salty, and delicious! They’re sliced relatively thin and offer the distinctive kettle cooked crunch that’ll have you coming back for more.

Color wise, the chips are not as dark as other brands of dark potato chips. There are, though, a few decidedly dark chips in the bag as you can see by the photo …

We’d say their color is more of a standard chip than a dark chip like Detroit’s Better Made, but we weigh in more on flavor than color or appearance. They’re sturdy enough to stand up to dips although we enjoy them best right out of the bag …
